We have reached the other side of a year that will certainly go down in the history books. We all have been touched in some way by forces beyond our control and speaking for myself, I felt at times, rudderless. While our lives will not turn on a dime, there is healing and repair on the horizon.
We begin January with Saturn and Jupiter continuing to be prominent planets, but kinder, much, much kinder. With their entry into pioneering Aquarius, we can take advantage of energy that is innovative, but also concerned with the greater good. Those of us in alternative health fields could see a boost in business.
Mars finally breaks free from Aries moving into Taurus on January 6 after being in its home sign since June of 2020. While Mars is happy in Aries, after a while it gets to be too much of a good thing and the naturally aggressive energy can takes its toll. Astrological tradition says that Mars isn’t comfortable in Taurus. Mars is the planet of "go" and Taurus is the sign of "take it slow." However, this doesn’t mean these two can’t work together. The key to success during Mars in Taurus is having solid roots before pursuing any new directions. It takes a great deal to move Mars when he’s in this sign, but there’s strength and endurance when the right door has been opened. In Aries, we are focused on initiating new projects, Taurus energy is about continuation of what has already begun. Mars in Taurus will get you to the finish line with any project or endeavor. But we could also find ourselves challenged by procrastination.

Mercury joins Saturn and Jupiter in Aquarius on January 8. When Mercury is in Aquarius, we are hungry for knowledge and open to new and original ideas. We begin to think outside of the box, and our thinking becomes more progressive and objective. Our communication and thought patterns are spontaneous, somewhat fragmented, and liberal. On the same day Venus moves into Capricorn and this energy is much more attuned with business partnership than romantic. In Capricorn, Venus has an appreciation of limits and definition. This is a sign of clear boundaries and commitment. While our sense of “fun” might be muted here, relationships and our bank balance benefit from a mature attitude and conservative approach.
The New Moon in Capricorn takes place on January 13 and overall this lunation feels like a test of strength. If we miss the mark, the universe will let us know where there is a weakness or what needs to be released to make us stronger. This new Moon asks us to get clear about what we need to firmly say no to in our lives so that we may give proper respect to our long-term professional priorities. Capricorn reminds us that there is only so much time in our life and so we must remove what wastes our most valuable resources.
Revolutionary Uranus forced an uncomfortable calm when it was retrograde keeping us from making the important changes we felt brewing beneath the surface. But now when Uranus turns direct on January 14 all of those urges we had been suppressing for that time will erupt on a personal and global scale. Uranus is the planet of shocks and surprises, but it was inhibited while in retrograde. It's been a period of relative quiet, but when it's direct we may experience both brilliant and disturbing ideas and events.
Jupiter squares Uranus on January 17, this month long transit has the potential to increase instability. Jupiter and Uranus are also future-forward planets but the square between them seems to suggest “too much - too soon”. Ground yourself if you feel wired. This square is especially crucial, since these planets only meet this way every 7 years (Look back to 2014 for clues.).
The Sun moves into Aquarius on January 19. This energy is known for its humanitarian efforts and its ability to look out for the collective. We can all use a hefty dose of healing and cooperation and I like that this energy is coming our way right before Inauguration Day since on January 20 there is a concerning alignment between Mars and Uranus. With both planets in determined Taurus, it’s going to be tense. We have already heard about protests being planned but this combo could bring more plot twists. Keep your wits about you.
As we move through January, we begin to feel some positive, healing energy in the form of the Full Moon in Leo on January 28. The Sun will be aligned with Jupiter at this Full Moon, which is considered a positive omen. Jupiter rules over abundance and expansion, so this is a powerful time to call in abundance and to allow yourself to shine. There really is some bright energy on this day. However, there is also some wildcard energy too. We really have to be mindful not to allow our ego to get in the way.
For nearly two weeks, from January 14 to 29, there will be zero retrograde planets. That can be a great time to make important decisions. Enjoy it while you can because on January 30 Mercury will turn retrograde in Aquarius. Though this retrograde may give us some much-needed breathing space to absorb any events, information or experiences we have come by during this month. For the next three weeks, we will review our connection to one another, our friends and networks, how we use technology and social media and consider what this Aquarian Age might mean for us.
