The big headline event for March, other than the start of the astrological year, is Saturn changing signs on March 21. Saturn changes signs every 2.5 years and when it does, it creates a ripple and shift in the cosmos that we all feel. Saturn is known as the Lord of Karma, so as it moves out of Capricorn, where it has been since 2017 and into Aquarius, we are going to be guided to wrap up a karmic cycle. Saturn will enter Aquarius for the first time since 1994. Saturn in Aquarius will turn its scythe toward unknown terrain in order to gather and harvest wisdom off the mainstream path and beyond the norm. Saturn feels secure, strong, and comfortably at home in Aquarius as Saturn was the ruler of Aquarius before the discovery of Uranus. But there is a different kind of expression than when residing in its other home of earthy Capricorn surrounded by structure and boundaries. In the airy climate of Aquarius, Saturn turns its slow and steady gaze outward, reordering structures and boundaries in order to make connections, distribute information, and develop innovations. Saturn will return briefly to Capricorn in July during its retrograde period, but will return permanently to Aquarius in December 2020. I will have more information on this transit later in the month, but now let’s return to the beginning of the month.

On March 4, Mercury retrograde enters Aquarius, perhaps also helping to clear minds as Mercury moves to air and away from watery Pisces. As Mercury re-enters Aquarius, we begin to question our friendships and connections, perhaps start thinking about the future. Possible negative manifestations are problems with friends and groups, political disagreements, technical glitches and mental anxiety.
On the same day Venus moves into its home sign of Taurus. We seek security and value that which lasts. Tangible and physical expressions of love and romance are most important now. Holding on to someone we love is our tendency under Venus in Taurus. The shadow side of this is excessive possessiveness and treating our partners as objects that we own or want to own. On the financial side, Venus in Taurus looks for high-quality, solid, practical, and long-lasting items. Insecurity issues can arise during this transit. In all matters of love and money, we need to check in with how we value ourselves and whether problems around self-worth are getting in the way.
We spring forward on March 8 as Daylight Savings Time begins.
A Full Moon in Virgo on March 9 opposes a Sun/Neptune conjunction. There’s a feeling that we’re striving for a perfection that cannot be matched to that of the Gods. We can either be plunged into feelings of inadequacy, disappointment or despair or we can tap into the array of supportive trines to planets in sensible Capricorn (Mars, Jupiter and Pluto). Practicality wins over idealism every time. And Mercury has stationed direct so any delay, frustration or confusion surrounding Mercury ruled matters will soon find resolution. In fact, now you'll be ready to apply whatever it is you've learned during the retrograde period into your current reality.
On March 16, Mercury is now direct and back into Pisces for another few weeks. We’ve learned how to let our intuition help us with decisions and let go of the idea that there is only one right answer. Indeed, maybe we’re learning to be okay with the fact that sometimes there are no answers at all. In communication matters, we may need to try to be clearer to avoid muddles but mostly the way we connect is filled with kindness.
The Sun enters Aries on March 19, returning us to the beginning of the zodiac and heralding the Spring Equinox, the beginning of Spring in the Northern hemisphere and the Pagan festival of Ostara. At Equinox, day and night are equal but after this time, the days will grow longer and the nights shorter. It’s a time to celebrate the return of energy, fire, warmth, light. With the Sun now in Aries, we’re asked to reconnect with our passions and to get excited about life. Just as the plants shoot up towards the Sun, we too may feel a sense of urgency to thrive and bloom.
Mars makes a conjunction to Pluto on March 22, a potent mix. This can be a potentially volatile aspect. Strength and power together can either be a force for good or just force! Military displays of might could be part of the picture. On an individual level, we have a huge amount of energy and will; it’s all about applying it to what is in our control.
The New Moon in Aries on March 24 is the blast off point of the astrological year. Each time we encounter Aries we are given an opportunity to begin anew. Aries contains the potential of all the other signs. As the first fire sign, it is the seed that already hold within it the spark of life. The work of each year’s New Moon in Aries is reclaiming the self. Who are you, apart from your family, your career, and your partner? It’s essential to honor our commitments, but we also have an obligation to fulfill our individual destinies.
The month ends with Mars entering Aquarius on March 30 where he immediately meets Saturn on March 31. Mars in Aquarius is a warrior for humanity, fighting for change. It’s time to champion progressive ideas, take the lead and initiate a revolution. But the conjunction between Mars and Saturn tells us that nothing can happen quickly. We’re going to have to plan for the long game. Still, perhaps this could benefit us as much as it frustrates because Mars in Aquarius can manifest as erratic energy. The conjunction gives us time to regroup, consider unconventional tactics and wait for our moment to strike.
