We begin the month with a high dose of Capricorn energy with the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto are all clustered in in this goal-oriented earth sign. Under the discerning and cautious Capricorn energy that opens 2020, we’re prodded to take stock of what we have, where we’re going and how long our current resources will last.

On January 3, Mars will rush into adventurous and farsighted Sagittarius, where he remains through February 16. You'll be motivated to expand your horizons and reach for new experiences. With Mars here, you'll also feel happier and more optimistic about your capacity to land on your feet. That's a definite assist as January quickly progresses into a Lunar Eclipse in Cancer on the January 10, followed by the stark Saturn-Pluto conjunction in Capricorn on January 12.
The Lunar Eclipse suggests a major awareness when it comes to your deepest need for emotional and domestic security. For some, this is a fulfilling eclipse where you'll realize that you truly are the source of your sustenance. For others you might feel like you've lost something or someone you rely on as a safety net. You already know what this breakdown is about, so if one does occur in your life, it was a long time coming. On this same day, capricious Uranus in Taurus leaves it’s retrograde orbit which could stimulate the economy or throw us a curveball, especially in the housing market.
The big game changer this month is Saturn/Pluto conjunction which occurs every 34 years and the results are life-changing and long lasting. Since this Great Conjunction occurs in Capricorn, the themes of rebuilding and transformation are centered on power, authority, traditions, and commerce. It has huge implications for our governments and economies, as we see forces of reform and change renovating these matters on personal and collective levels. Those of you who are sensitive to energetic movement may have already felt the stirrings as these powerful planets move into position. The recent violence in Iran and Iraq are typical of this energy. When these two planets aligned in 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was shot to death with his wife by Bosnian Serb Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo, Bosnia. This event is widely regarded as sparking the outbreak of World War I. I will have an in-depth post with coping strategies on this conjunction in a few days
On January 13 Venus moves into Pisces. Venus is exalted in Pisces, which means Pisces compliments Venus' nature so its energy is magnified. Moving out of detached Aquarius there will be more romance, gentleness, compassion and sympathy. Venus here can build supportive and fortunate connections that have a transcendental and spiritual quality.
Mercury moving from the serious and somber Capricorn into the free-wheeling and stubborn sign of Aquarius on January 16 suggests a change of mental mood. Aquarius is a sign dealing with the world at large and our interwoven humanitarian connection. With Mercury in this airy sign our thoughts may become quicker and more future oriented on the soul level of us and on the motives of the other. The energy needs expression through new ideas and social connections.
The sun moves into the expansive Air sign of Aquarius on January 20 and brings innovative ideas that can inspire and uplift your life. As you stretch your point of view to this vast outlook, you can gain new ideas and insights to stimulate your life plan. Before the discovery of Uranus, Aquarius was ruled by Saturn, so there is a carry-over of focus on the serious matters at hand. If we can imagine that the structures and systems of our society are built by Capricorn forces, then we can imagine the Aquarian forces as those that test the relevancy and validity of these systems. It’s the time of year for deep contemplation within as we experience the isolation of winter, pondering the foundations of our lives from a new, unconventional perspective.
The New Moon in Aquarius on January 24, makes this the best time of the year to break with the old and embrace the new. Your intimately personal visions are seen as part of the greater whole. Find ways to experiment with changing your life by changing your thoughts. Nurture dreams that send the best of you back out into the world. In six months when the moon is full in Aquarius (during the time of Leo), we will look back from a culmination on whatever was begun today.
The year 2020 not only ushers in a new decade, but a new astrological cycle. This year begins the transformation from how it’s always been to what it will be. I’m going to be honest here, the planetary alignments coming this year are not easy ones; they are rare and are the initiators of change. There is no point in trying to deny or ignore what’s happening around you, it’s going to happen anyway, so use it to your advantage. By actively asserting the role you wish to play in molding the world to come will help you cultivate new levels of inner strength as well as new skills to share with others.
