First, a little astronomy…
There are 4 celestial occurrences each year that mark the seasons. They are the Equinoxes and the Solstices. Today is the Autumn Equinox marking the Sun’s move into Libra and the start of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.
During the equinox, the Sun crosses what we call the “celestial equator”, an imaginary extension into space of Earth’s equator line. The equinox occurs precisely when the Sun’s center passes through this line. When the Sun crosses the equator from north to south, this marks the autumnal equinox. After the autumnal equinox, nights begins to grow longer than the days. This ends with the December solstice, when days start to grow longer and nights shorter.
The ancestors knew that it was time to bring in the harvest and prepare for the long winter ahead. They also knew that it might be some time before they saw their friends and families over the winter months. They had celebrations and contests which we now know as Fall fairs and festivals.
It amazes me how they constructed their time keepers. With great accuracy I may add. Here as a few that the ancients used to track the transitions of the Earth’s journey around the Sun.
· Machu Picchu in Peru, an ancient stone monument called Intihuatana, which means “Hitching Post of the Sun”. It serves as a solar clock to mark the dates of the equinoxes and solstices.
· In Mexico, the Mayans built a giant pyramid called Chichen Itza. On the equinoxes, it looks as if a snake made of light slithers down the pyramid’s steps.
· And in England, the most famous - Stonehenge - was also built with the equinoxes and solstices in mind.
Libra a cardinal air sign is ruled by Venus and assigned to the Justice card of the tarot. Libra is the sign of balance and under the influence of Libra we seek harmony between the aspects of our life that are inharmonious. Just as we cross the midway point of the seasonal year at this time, we also cross the midpoint of the Zodiac, which begins in the spring with Aries.
