Beginning today for 5 months until November 22nd, Neptune will orbit Retrograde. If you’ve read enough of my post here, you will remember that Planets in retrograde are not actually spinning backwards, it is entirely an optical illusion as seen from Earth. In astrology, this illusion manifests as a “backwards” functioning of the planetary roles.
Since April 2011, Neptune has been transiting Pisces, the sign it rules and where Neptune’s energy works best. When a planet has moved into its ruling sign, we say that it is “at home.” With Neptune at home, a global spiritual awakening is unfolding. However, this has also continued to manifest as a massive existential crisis.
Many trends in popular culture reflect Neptune’s current placement: the legalization of medical/recreational marijuana in many states; the rise in popularity of yoga, reiki and tai chi; extra-terrestrial themes in music and pop culture; on the downside, the creation of designer drugs; and the skyrocketing opioid addiction.
Both Pisces and Neptune rule the 12th House in our natal chart, represents the way we explore and deal with our inner depths, marking a difference between spiritual growth and escapism. They are imaginative and highly creative. Together they rule ego-death, universal love and compassion, divine sacrifice and enlightenment.
When Neptune turns retrograde our feelings are more astute at picking up and perceiving the illusive. It is easier to ascertain information about issues that have eluded us while Neptune was direct. It is essential that we do something about the problems that we pick up on while Neptune is retrograde because they can worsen when Neptune goes direct. A retrograde Neptune tends to blur the boundaries between reality and illusion, and makes dreams larger than life. This is therefore a good time to delve into your dreams, to listen to your intuition, to experience music and art, and to seek inspiration. Be sure however to keep a good grip on the practical aspects of life and avoid being cast adrift on the sea of unreality. A Neptune retrograde in Pisces is a good time to refocus or recommit to your spiritual side and attune yourself to pursuits that help grow Self.
